Swine flu paranoia subsides

It seems people here have lowered their guard against swine flu ever since the Philippines’ Department of Health refrained from holding daily news conferences about the spread of the virus.

Newspapers have stopped carrying banner stories about swine flu.

I no longer see people wearing face masks.

People have returned to their unsanitary habits (not covering the orifices that should be covered when coughing and sneezing, spitting everywhere, among others).

I’m not complaining that the paranoia over swine flu has died down.

But I do disdain the return of unhygienic practices, especially in public places.
