Philippines’ Noynoy Aquino takes presidential oath of office

Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III has just taken his oath of office as the 15th President of the Philippines.

Noynoy is the only son of assassinated Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Junior and former President Corazon “Cory” Aquino.

The first and only time I saw Noynoy in person was in August last year, during the wake of his mother at the Manila Cathedral. (Here’s my post about Cory Aquino’s death)

He was a senator then, and probably didn’t have an inkling that in less than a year, he would be the leader of more than 90 million Filipinos.

Anti-corruption drive

During his campaign to capture the presidency, Noynoy vowed to go after rotten officials in the bureaucracy.

More than 15 million voters gave him their approval in the Philippines’ first automated national elections on May 10, 2010.

Corruption has long been the bane of the Philippines.

The country has lots of problems, but I believe corruption is the worst one.

I hope President Noynoy Aquino succeeds at wiping out corruption in the government.
