Song lyrics: I want to go back

I WANT TO GO BACK

A decade with you
Taken for granted
Now I’m feeling blue
Everything’s wasted
Why did I ever leave you?

I want to go back
To those happy days
I want to go back
To my happy place

I’m suffocating
In this horrid place
I’m just surviving
Want to see your face
Why did I ever leave you?

I want to go back
To those happy days
I want to go back
To my happy place

These are the lyrics of the song that I’ve written for Coursera’s Songwriting massive open online course (MOOC) taught by Pat Pattison of the Berklee College of Music.

We were asked to write an unstable verse and a stable chorus. I did a good job, based on the score (29/30) that I received from my classmates.

My peers’ comments:

Peer 1: Very strong work! I feel like you really thought about line length when you wrote this.

Peer 2: [This area was left blank by the evaluator.]

Peer 3: Nice work! I look forward to hearing how this sounds put to music.

Peer 4: Try to find a stronger way to say “happy place”, the despair in the verse demands it.

The comments of Peers 1 and 3 were all positive, but I liked the comment of Peer 4 the most because s/he recognized the point of the song: desperation.

This was Peer Review Assignment Number 2. I hope my Peer Review Assignment Number 3 score will be as good as the second one. Or even better.

I’m not particularly interested in a high score though. It’s great, but what’s really important is that I’m learning how to write a song.
